Double Vision Can Severely Limit What You Can Do. Take Steps to Treat It.

Many conditions may cause double vision, from astigmatism to suffering from a stroke. Double vision can not only impact what you see. It can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, and pain around the eyes. It can interfere with your balance to the point you can’t walk straight or you may feel fine when sitting down, but lose your balance when you stand. If you’re dealing with double vision, you need to find out why and explore possible treatments to get your life back in focus.

Some of the problems that can cause double vision include:
  • Cornea: The cornea is the cover of the front of the eye. It focuses incoming light into the eye. If the surface is distorted you could see double images. Astigmatism, dry eyes, infections or scars caused by a disease, injury or infection can cause this distortion.
  • Lens: The lens in your eye works with the cornea to focus incoming light onto the retina in the rear of your eye. The lens, which is behind the pupil, changes shape as it focuses. If you have double vision you may have a cataract (the clouding of what should be a clear lens, usually caused by aging)
  • Muscle: Six muscles in your eye socket control your eye's movement. Double vision can result if both eyes fail to move in the same direction. These issues could be caused by Graves' disease, a thyroid condition, or strabismus, a weakened or paralyzed eye muscle preventing the eyes from aligning properly
  • Nerve: Nerves connecting the brain to the muscles controlling eye movement may be impacted by diabetes (which affects your ability to process blood sugar, causing nerve damage), Guillain-Barre syndrome (a nerve condition), Myasthenia gravis (an autoimmune disorder that causes the immune system to attack neuromuscular junctions involved in eye movement), and multiple sclerosis (a chronic neurological disease)
  • Brain: If areas of the brain processing visual information are harmed by illness or injury, double vision can result. These brain conditions causing double vision can include an aneurysm, tumor, stroke, migraine headache, or pressure inside the brain due to bleeding, infection or trauma
Proper treatment of double vision depends on correctly diagnosing the cause. It can start after the reason for the problem is found.
  • Blocking or blurring one eye’s vision to minimize double vision by using an eye patch, an occlusive lens (a contact lens or a lens applied to glasses) or a Fresnel prism applied to glasses
  • Injecting Botox into the stronger eye muscle to relax it, allowing the weaker eye muscle to recover. Botox may be a temporary or permanent fix
  • Surgery can treat some muscular problems
  • Treatment of the medical condition causing the double vision, such as diabetes, a sinus condition, facial fractures, Graves’ disease, myasthenia gravis or cancer in the brain
