What is LASIK?

LASIK is an acronym for Laser Assisted in situ Keratomileusis. It is a refractive surgery procedure that is used to correct myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness) and astigmatism in people who are over 18 years of age. It is a painless procedure and completed within minutes. First, your LASIK doctor performs an eye examination to evaluate the thickness of your cornea, pupil size and your overall health to find out if LASIK is right for you. Some people develop dry eyes after LASIK, so the possibility of that is also evaluated and your doctor will recommend a suitable LASIK treatment plan. However, be advised that LASIK is an elective procedure and you should check with your insurance company to find out if the costs will be covered.

What is the process of LASIK?

The ophthalmologist works around your cornea in LASIK eye surgery. First, you will be administered eye drops that will numb your eyelids. This takes 10-15 minutes to take effect. Post which, the surgeon creates a thin flap using laser and he folds it to enable remodeling of the tissue beneath. The excimer laser reshapes your cornea to correct the refractive error. You might hear some noises and smell odor during the procedure. Rest assured, it is completely normal. The flap is then replaced and healing eye drops are administered. That's it, the complete procedure takes about 20-30 minutes.

How should I care for my eyes post LASIK?

Post-surgery you will be given an antibiotic course, anti-inflammatory eye drops and are advised to rest well. Although you can resume work after 48 hours, patients are advised to wear dark eye-glasses to protect the eyes from bright lights. Preservative-free drops might be given to keep your eyes moisturized. You will be asked to visit the doctor for follow up checkup after a course of six months.

What are the possible risks and complications from LASIK?

Dry eyes: They are common and a temporary complication post LASIK. Keeping the eyes well moisturized using drops keeps it from getting dry. Dry eyes usually disappear in about 3 to 6 months post-surgery. Infection: Antibiotics are prescribed to eliminate the risk of infection post-surgery. However, if you develop some discharge or discomfort, it is advised to contact your doctor immediately. Keratoectasia: Although very rare, the main symptom of Keratoectasia is blurred vision. This condition can occur if a patient has lurking corneal disease. Your doctor will likely find this in his evaluation and suggest you not to opt for LASIK. Over or under correction: Residual refractive error might be common in patients with a very high-power prescription. They have to undergo a follow-up procedure called ‘Enhancement’ to correct this issue. Halo: Halo will affect the way your eyes see light at night or in dim conditions. In most cases, it naturally corrects over time. LASIK is a very quick and common procedure nowadays for correcting your vision. Contact your eye doctor to find out if you are ready for LASIK.
